On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the City of Kastela organized the first stakeholder workshop as part of the ProLIGHTmed project: a significant event held to bring together a variety of stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to modernizing public lighting systems.
A pilot action for coastal lighting
As a key partner in the project, Kastela is implementing a pilot action to replace the public lighting system along its coastal zone. This initiative aims to enhance the sustainability of the city’s infrastructure while preserving the unique characteristics of its coastal area. By adopting energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting technologies, Kaštela sets an example for other municipalities in the Euro-MED region.
Key highlights from the workshop
The workshop offered a comprehensive blend of theoretical insights and practical applications. Participants were introduced to the ProLIGHTmed methodology, gaining an understanding of the principles of energy-efficient lighting and its biological impacts, such as effects on circadian rhythms and sleep quality. Discussions emphasized the application of these solutions in coastal areas, highlighting how such lighting systems can enhance the attractiveness of these zones, benefit biodiversity, and improve the quality of life for residents and tourists. Experts also provided a detailed comparison of ProLIGHTmed innovative solutions with conventional systems, analyzing the advantages and life-cycle costs of different lighting technologies. Attendees were further engaged through practical demonstrations of ProLIGHTmed equipment, including corrosion-resistant fixtures and smart lighting control systems specifically designed for coastal environments. The event concluded with interactive discussions, where stakeholders shared best practices, addressed technical and financial questions, and explored future opportunities for integrating the project technologies into broader urban management systems.
Strengthening cooperation for a sustainable future
The event underscored the importance of cooperation and active stakeholder engagement in achieving sustainable urban development. By bringing together representatives from neighboring cities, small and medium-sized enterprises, community associations, and environmental organizations, the workshop organized by Kastela fostered meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
