Workshop in Akamas, Cyprus: Advancing sustainability public lighting

24/12/2024

On December 18, 2024, the Municipality of Akamas hosted the first workshop under the ProLIGHTmed project, focused on sustainable public lighting strategies. The event, attended by local stakeholders, experts, and representatives from local action groups, aimed to explore opportunities and challenges in transitioning to greener public lighting systems, aligning with the broader goals of sustainability and carbon reduction.

Agenda highlights

The workshop, structured into two key sessions, offered valuable insights and practical discussions.

The morning session began with a comprehensive introduction to low-carbon strategies for local communities where participants explored how adopting sustainable public lighting to benefit local growth, mitigate climate change, and align with ProLIGHTmed’s goals. A detailed overview of the project’s scope, objectives, and tools was presented, including the COMPOSE methodology – a step-by-step approach for registering and monitoring public lighting initiatives.

The second session focused on practical applications and case studies. Participants examined the current landscape of public lighting at national, regional, and local levels, identifying energy-saving opportunities through technologies like LED lighting, smart controls, and renewable energy integration. Key highlights included a comprehensive analysis of existing public lighting systems and the potential for modernization. The session also showcased successful projects that demonstrated significant reductions in CO₂ emissions through innovative technologies. Additionally, attendees engaged in data collection activities using a questionnaire developed by the project partner ENA, with findings to be analyzed and discussed in a follow-up workshop to refine future strategies.

Breakthrough discussions and next steps

The Akamas workshop served as a platform for meaningful dialogue among stakeholders, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing. The insights gathered from the data collection activities will shape the next phases of ProLIGHTmed, ensuring that the strategies developed are tailored to local needs and contexts. This event marked an important milestone in the ProLIGHTmed project’s journey toward sustainable public lighting solutions in the Euro-MED area. By engaging communities and leveraging innovative tools, the project aims to create lasting environmental and economic benefits.
